How to buy a Wedding Suit? 10 Tips
It’s not something you handle daily, but it’s an exciting task to dive into: how do you get your dream wedding suit? And when should you start? How do you find inspiration? What should you consider? Answers to these and many more questions can be found in this list of 10 tips for ordering a wedding suit.
Wear What Fits You
Of course, it all starts with the big question: what do you want to wear? What does your perfect outfit look like on your wedding day? If we could paint a picture, your suit should first and foremost reflect you. We believe it’s a must that your wedding outfit makes you feel comfortable, confident, and authentically yourself. Tip 1: Make sure your wedding suit is an extension of your personality.
Before you run off to the store with this tip in hand, it’s helpful to do a bit of homework. Trust us—there’s a lot to choose from. Quickly picking out an outfit is fine, but giving your attire for this day a little extra thought will be something you won’t regret. After all, the photos and videos will last a lifetime. A good reason, in our opinion, to go the extra mile—especially if you’re a fashion enthusiast. Tip 2: Prepare by thinking about three things: color, style, and material.
Styles
Styles abound. Make sure the style of your wedding outfit matches the theme or vibe of your day. Above all, ensure it complements the style of the wedding dress. Here are some ideas:
- If you’re tying the knot barefoot on the beach, consider a breezy linen suit or an open-weave wool/linen blend with a relaxed fit.
- Is your wedding at an estate or castle? That setting might call for a classic three-piece navy suit made from fine wool or a wool-silk blend.
- Hosting an evening with a black-tie dress code? A midnight-blue tuxedo might be a great choice.
- Planning a more relaxed celebration? Consider a colorful suit in one of this year’s trend colors or a unique design, such as a double-breasted jacket or vest.
For every setting, there’s a unique and fitting style. Tip 3: Explore different wedding suit styles on Instagram, Pinterest, or other favorite sources (or ask your fiancée...unless your outfit is a surprise for her too!).
Colors
We already touched on this. What colors are in your outfit? Do you prefer muted tones, or will you step out of your comfort zone for this special occasion? Tip 4: Check out our blog on the spring and summer 2025 trends to learn all about timeless hues and trending colors.
Materials
These days, fabric mills offer a wide range of materials. The traditional wedding suit is often made of wool, sometimes blended with silk or mohair. Blends are currently very popular—think wool mixed with silk and linen or cotton. These fabrics are breathable and have a less formal appearance. Want to learn more about classic or trendy materials? Out and About
At this point, it’s a good idea to visit stores experienced in providing wedding suits. Explore a few places and leave with some options that excite you. Take photos of these choices so you can review them later at your leisure. Tip 6: Bring your screenshots (or your full-on mood board, if you’ve gone all out) to your appointments.
Try on different colors, feel various materials, and explore different styles and designs. This “safari” through different retailers should be a fun outing. Tip 7: Take a few (maximum of 3) people whose fashion opinions you value and who would enjoy being part of this adventure.
Decision Time
After sleeping on it, you’ve made your decision. Schedule an appointment and make sure the shop you choose has the time and attention your wedding suit deserves. If you plan to lose 10 kilos before the big day, it’s wise to wait until you’ve achieved that goal before getting fitted for a suit. Tip 8: Choose a store with a solid track record and one where you feel comfortable.
Fitting and Styling
Buying your wedding suit is one thing, but you’re not done yet. You’ll want the suit to fit perfectly. Take the time to schedule a fitting appointment. A professional shop will remind you of this. During the fitting, the focus will be on the fit, and finishing touches will be made—like adjusting the length of the trousers and sleeves. This is also the time to think about styling: your shirt, tie, bowtie, pocket square, shoes, socks, hat, and boutonniere. Tip 9: Bring a shirt and shoes to your fitting so the lengths of the trousers and jacket can be checked properly.
Timing
When is the right time to order your wedding suit? Let’s differentiate between a custom-made suit and a ready-to-wear suit. Here’s the principle: the earlier, the better especially if you’re getting married during the busy spring or summer season. It’s a shame if you wait too long and your favorite suit is no longer available in your size, or the fabric for your custom suit is sold out.
We recommend ordering a custom suit at least 3 months before the big day. For a ready-to-wear suit, 2 months is the minimum. Sounds like a long time? Not when you consider that you’ll want the complete set hanging in your closet a few weeks before the deadline, with enough time for adjustments, shopping for accessories, and having a backup plan if needed. Tip 10: Start sooner rather than later.
Now you know how the process of ordering a custom suit works. Don’t forget to have fun along the way!
